Was the Iran rescue mission a triumph of American strength or proof the war is far more costly than claimed?

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

The U.S. military just pulled off one of the most daring rescue operations in American history, extracting the second F-15E crew member from deep inside Iran without a single American casualty. This is what American strength looks like — no soldier left behind, no matter the odds or the enemy. When the Commander in Chief commits to bringing warriors home, the mission gets done.

Anti-Trump narrative

The rescue was extraordinary, but the war is not what's being sold — Iran shot down a $100 million fighter, mobilized thousands to hunt the crew and forced a massive ground battle requiring A-10 gun runs just to recover one man. Two American transport aircraft had to be destroyed on Iranian soil to keep advanced technology out of enemy hands. Calling Iran "annihilated" while operators are fighting the IRGC in its own mountains is a dangerous fantasy.
