ICE Arrests Colombian Activist in Arizona

Is this a civil liberties violation or a justified consequence of abusing asylum seeking privileges?

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Beto Coral is an asylum seeker with legal standing in the U.S. — his arrest is a serious threat to civil liberties and due process. If political activity was the basis for this detention, that's a direct violation of First Amendment protections. Allegations of coordination between U.S. officials and Colombian political actors would make the Trump administration complicit in transnational repression.

Republican narrative

Asylum seekers enjoy privileges with real obligations, and using that protection as a platform to act against the host country's interests is an abuse of the system. Coral spent his time in the U.S. attacking the very government sheltering him and pushing a foreign political agenda that goes against that of Washington.
